Last week, members of the New House Republican Caucus sent a letter to Governor Walz asking that he reinstate the requirement that individuals must be actively looking for work if they are receiving unemployment insurance. This is a long-established rule that helps to ensure people do not take advantage of the system.
Yesterday, Dept. of Employment and Economic Development Commissioner Grove responded to the letter, claiming that these requirements are still in place.
The requirements may still be listed on the website and on applications for unemployment insurance BUT Executive Order 20-05 suspends strict enforcement of the statute that requires people to be actively looking for work. This was done in order to make it easier for people to receive UI. Governor Walz’s executive orders have created an environment where businesses are unable to hire enough workers. Now that the emergency is over, we need to reverse course and encourage people to get back to work.
